Zeller Plastik Expands into Beverage Market

Global Closure Systems (GCS), the inventor of the hinged closure and a leading global supplier of dispensing and delivery systems, has expanded its manufacturing capacity in the Philippines to serve the local market’s robust demand for carbonated soft drinks (CSD).

The company today officially launches two new manufacturing lines for beverage closures under the Obrist brand in its Manila plant.

Zeller Plastik Philippines has been supplying tube closures to leading MNCs in the personal care and household industry since 1992.

GCS invested substantially in the expansion of the plant to enable it to fabricate an additional 500 million beverage closures annually.

The new lines will produce Obrist closures for carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks — both for PET and returnable glass bottles.

“The Philippines, with its large population, has the second highest per capita consumption of carbonated soft drinks in Asia,” says Bertrand Tellier, Regional Sales Director of GCS Asia Pacific.

“Our combination of European technologies and local technical expertise on the new lines will undoubtedly better serve local market needs, as well as those around the region.”

The implementation of locally manufactured closures is critical and is in response to the industry’s growing environmental pressure and the needs of the Philippines customer base.

Currently, significant volumes of closures are imported to serve the local market which has a cost and impact to the environment.

This investment will significantly shorten lead times which in turn gives the supply chain greater flexibility.

Ashley Jones, Vice President of GCS Asia Pacific, says in tandem with GCS's extension into the beverage market, the company is also implementing stringent food safety quality standards which includes HACCP and GMP.

"This expansion project demonstrates our confidence in and the long-term commitment to the Philippines market," he says.

"Eliminating transportation reduces our carbon footprint and is one of the many practical approaches we take to conserve the environment and fulfil our corporate responsibility.”

The new manufacturing lines at Zeller Plastik Philippines are fully operational.
