Due to consumer demand ‘Chilli Go Green’ a Melbourne - based promotional products company is marketing an environmentally friendly plastic bag.
The “Ultimate Biodegradable Plastic Bag" is just one of the many pioneering product launches from innovative companies participating in this year’s Retail Expo Australasia 2009 to be held in Melbourne.
Australians use 3.92 billion plastic bags a year, that's over 10 million new bags being used each day.
An estimated 3.76 billion bags or 20,700 tonnes of plastic are disposed of in landfill sites throughout Australia every year.
Australians rid 7,150 recyclable plastic bags to landfills every minute or 429,000 bags every hour. (Source: www.cleanup.com.au)
Alternatives to traditional plastic bags are being developed in response to increased retailer and consumer environmental awareness.
Unlike other re-usable cloth fabric bags which some retailers provide to customers, the Ultimate Biodegradable Plastic Bag is made of a compostable and biodegradable material containing corn starch.
The bag is specially designed to decompose in compost and will disintegrate within 90 days of being placed in compost — changing into carbon dioxide, water and biomass within six months versus 1000 years for traditional plastic bags.
The Chilli Ultimate Biodegradable Plastic Bag is 100% Carbon Neutral and is certified by The Carbon Reduction Institute.
There are carbon emissions in the manufacturing or disposal process — however it is the reduction in Chilli Go Green’s carbon footprint which is the key.
By calculating the volume of carbon emissions involved in it’s manufacture, shipping and disposal, Chilli Go Green have acquired Greenhouse Friendly certified carbon credits from a methane avoidance project in Western Australia to offset environmental impacts.
Globally many countries are introducing levies in a bid to decrease the amount of plastic bags used. Fortunately the Ultimate Biodegradable Plastic Bag is exempt from such levies as it complies with the Australian standard for compostable/ biodegradable plastics.
Chilli Go Green also offers promotional products to all sectors, in particular the retail sector, supplying environmentally friendly promotional products and merchandise all which are being Carbon Neutral certified.
Chilli Go Green’s Ultimate Biodegradable Plastic Bag is just one of many products in the Green section of the Retail Expo Australasia 2009.
