Telstra's eco design gets thumbs up

Telstra’s consideration of eco-designed packaging and its re-design of an existing consumer product have earned it a place as a finalist in the Retail Packaging Action Award, sponsored by Cryovac.

Spending millions of dollars every year on product and packaging design, Telstra found that becoming a National Packaging Covenant signatory highlighted environmental re-design opportunities to them that they may have otherwise never considered.

The packaging design of Telstra’s Pre-Paid Mobile Starter Kits was changed significantly to lessen its impact on the environment, including the reduction of the packaging’s thickness, the removal of all glue dots, adhesives, plastic sleeves and plastic hangsells, as well as utilisation of sustainable and recyclable material.

This resulted in reducing tonnage waste from 58% per package to 9.8% per package in the production process, and reducing the total packaging tonnage waste by 73% per annum.

Environmental logos and/or statements on packaging and marketing materials are being used by the company to inform customers about the packaging’s appropriate disposal.
