Spotlight, Australia’s largest fabric, craft and home decorating retailer has formed a partnership with Visy Recycling to further increase its already impressive sustainability record.

Visy Recycling will collect over 1800 tonnes of cardboard from the 105 Spotlight stores this year.

Chief Executive Officer of Spotlight Mr Stephen Carter says at Spotlight it's believed ther business presents great potential to effect positive change.

"This partnership with VISY Recycling to recycle our cardboard and plastic wrap will dramatically reduce our green house gas emissions and reduce our overall carbon footprint," he says.

“As a large Australian owned company we have a responsibility in playing our part in restoring the environment and ensuring a healthy planet for future generations.”

Chief Executive Officer of VISY Mr John Murphy says Visy is delighted to be partnering with another leading Australian company to benefit both the environment and the business’ bottom line.

"Like Spotlight, more and more companies are realising that sustainability makes sound business sense," Murphy says.

“Cardboard is one of the most sustainable of packaging products, as it is able to be recovered and reused many times during its lifecycle."

“Businesses that recycle cardboard, rather than just sending it to landfill, ensure a significant environmental and sustainability benefit can be attained.”

  • For Spotlight, the annual benefits include the equivalent of:
  • a reduction of 720 tonnes in Co2 -e green house gas emissions,
  • the removal of 173 cars permanently from the road,
  • saving over 17 Olympic swimming pools of water,
  • saving 1500 homes annual electricity consumption, and
  • preventing the harvesting of 23,400 trees.

In addition to recycling cardboard, Spotlight will also recycle 134 tonnes of LDPE plastic film annually.

“Providing recycling services, not only makes each one of our customers businesses more sustainable, but also helps us fight climate change by reducing green house gas emissions,” John Murphy says.

"Spotlight understands that the world is changing and climate change is a huge challenge facing this generation."

“By recycling cardboard and plastic film, Spotlight has signalled its commitment to addressing climate change through altering its business practices to make a long term difference,” he says.

“Without substantial action and the commitment to change, we as a global community will never effectively address the climate change problem,” says Stephen Carter.

"The partnership with Visy Recycling is one of many programs Spotlight is undertaking across its business to further underpin its commitment to the environment."
