Machine developed to recycle polystyrene

Taylor Products, in partnership with Purex International has developed the Styromelt Polystyrene Densifier to help packaging companies recycle polystyrene.

Every year thousands of tonnes of polystyrene are sent to landfill unnecessarily. The main reason companies do not recycle polystyrene is that it does not yield much material compared to its weight and volume, making it expensive to store and transport for little gain. For the same reasons, local authority recycling centres do not separate polystyrene for recycling.

The Styromelt machine allows companies to save significant money on skip hire while enabling local authority recycling centres to stop sending polystyrene to landfill. A two cubic metre load is melted down into a small, dense and sterilised block of material which can be removed from the machine and easily stored. The densified polystyrene blocks can be sold to recyclers to make new fuels or products, such as garden furniture.
